ADDRESS OF H.R,H, THE DUKE OF BRAGANÇA GIVEN AT THE SEPTEMBER 18TH, 2021 DINNER GATHERING OF THE AMS RISMAON OCCASION OF THE SMA 850TH ANNIVERSARY JUBILEE AND 20th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CANONICAL ERECTION OF THE FIRST ROYAL BROTHEHOOD

Your Excellency  Archbishop Timothy Broglio,

Esteemed Judge of the Royal Brotherhood of Saint Michael of the Wing Stephen Besinaiz and Members of the Board,

Brothers and Sisters of the Royal Brotherhood of Saint Michael of the Wing,

Knights, Dames of the Portuguese Royal House,

Supporters and Guests,

Your Excellency,

Honorable friends, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, Knights and Dames,

It is with a sad heart that I am unable to attend this year’s event in the United States on occasion of the 850 Jubilee of the Order of Saint Michael of the Wing as decreed by Pope Francis with grant of special Indulgence,

My Godfather at Baptism, Pope Pius XII once wrote of Portugal: “Of all the Nations, only Portugal was called to be Apostolic”, and this is true for we can see from history the role that Portugal played in the spread of the Faith in Christ and also in the missionary work it promoted for the care of those who were in desperate need.

We continue this work through our 850 year old Order, today a Brotherhood that stands strong for 20 years.

We provide for basic needs in the true Spirit of Christian Charity.  In this effort to help the poor and the missions of the Military Archdiocese we count on the regular contribution of the Knights and Dames of the Portuguese Royal House that support the Dioceses directly or the various charitable and cultural projects carried out by the Foundations and Institutes under our royal Patronage.

The Brotherhoods are today Diocesan Institutions under the Patronage of the Royal House and whose members (professed or Honorary) by proposal of the local Bishop, Chaplain or Judge can be invested in the Royal Order of the Wing of Saint Michael, the oldest chivalric Order of Portugal.

Today primarily in recognition of the charitable works in favor of the Missions and the poor, Knights and Dames are called to make greater sacrifices to raise and send funds, medication, and supplies to help those in dire need and aid orphans in São Tomé.

A Royal Brotherhood has been Canonically-erected by His Excellency Archbishop Timothy Brogilo, for the Archdiocese for Military Services (AMS) with the Archbishop as Ecclesiastical Patron and Spiritual Protector in the United States. Its Members largely are veterans or Active, Reserve, or Retired US members of the Armed Forces who also support the needs of the Archdiocese

I join His Excellency in thanking you for holding this post COVID19 dinner event and thank all of you for your generosity.

My condolences to Steve Besinaiz who is not present because of  the passing of his Father in law.

I hope to see you all again soon in the USA, in Alcobaça, Portugal or Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

God Bless you and Our Lady of Fatima and Saint Michael protect you!
